Clinical Investigations

A full range of investigations can be arranged, including:

  • Blood tests,
  • Allergy screening,
  • X-rays, Nuclear Medicine, CT and MRI imaging,
  • Lung function testing,
  • Sleep studies
  • Echocardiography, ECGs and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

For patients seen at London Bridge or Canary Wharf, investigations are carried out in the state-of-the-art facilities at

HCA London Bridge Hospital.

Where more convenient, tests can also be arranged at alternative centres — including One Welbeck and TDL — and Dr Brame holds practising privileges at HCA The Lister Hospital, Chelsea.

Dr Brame routinely coordinates comprehensive investigations and ongoing care for patients from across the UK — distance is never a barrier to high-quality, personalised medical care.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing, or CPET, is a detailed exercise test that assesses how your heart, lungs, circulation and muscles work together during physical activity.

Unlike standard breathing tests performed at rest, CPET can help identify why someone becomes breathless or unusually fatigued during exercise, particularly when routine investigations have not provided a clear explanation.

During the test, you will usually exercise on a stationary bicycle while your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, ECG and blood pressure are monitored. You will wear a lightweight mask or mouthpiece that measures the oxygen you use and the carbon dioxide you produce as the intensity of exercise gradually increases.

CPET can be particularly useful in the assessment of:

  • Unexplained breathlessness
  • Reduced exercise tolerance or fatigue
  • Suspected heart or lung limitations
  • Pulmonary vascular disease
  • Persistent symptoms following illness, including post-viral syndromes
  • Dysfunctional breathing or abnormal breathing patterns during exercise
  • More complex cases where several factors may be contributing to symptoms

The results provide a detailed picture of what happens to your body during exercise and can help guide further investigation, treatment and rehabilitation.
